Today is Tlusty czwartek – ‘Fat Thursday’ – in the Polish calendar, a day dedicated to consuming as many doughnuts as possible to stave off those hunger pangs during the forthcoming period of lent. We managed to join in the celebrations by dusting off a few traditional rose jam filled, orange crusted doughnuts – but office record was five by one person… this is a holiday that is taken very seriously.
We didn’t get a chance to try the faworki pastry mentioned on the Wikipedia page, but we did see it piled high alongside the ludicrous amounts of doughnuts that were pouring out of the many bakeries near the office. Never mind, we plan on celebrating Fat Thursday well into the weekend…
