Sphinx review

Sphinx

It was a cold cold night in Gdansk, so we decided to go to possibly the closest eatery to our apartment: a casual restaurant in Madison shopping centre called Sphinx.

The huge menu will ensure there is something for everyone, but after eyeing the huge plates passing us by we decided a main course would be enough and skipped starters.

The amount did not disappoint. One dish was a medium steak with an unknown sauce, potato wedges and salad. Apart from the steak being a little overdone, but still somehow gray on the outside, it was a good choice. The fresh salad was dressed with vinigrette, the potato wedges were hot and crispy and the steak was still tasty.

The other dish was swarma kebab, vegetables and chips. Not something we would usually tackle before 10 pints, but it was tasty and there was lots of it.

After such a big meal we decided to share a dessert of creme brulee. The bowl arrived looking sad and pale with a lot of granulated sugar on top which hadn’t been flamed at all. On questioning the waiter, we discovered they haven’t the equipment to caramelise the sugar and he took the dish away.

The service was friendly and attentive and the bill was insanely cheap at 68PLN (that’s less than £14) including 2 medium apple juices. One final piece of advice – choose a table on the bottom floor of the restaurant, otherwise it will feel like you’re eating in a… shopping centre!

4 huge portions out of 5
